Flameworking is a type of glasswork that uses a torch to melt rods and tubes of clear and colored glass. Once in a molten state, the glass is formed by blowing and shaping with tools and hand movements.

There are two types of glass used for flameworking; soft and hard. Vicki works with soft glass which is actually the more difficult of the two to work with. I'm not going to go into the ins and outs of creating flameworked works of art because that's what Vicki does at her studio but I will say the process of creating flameworked pieces is tedious, time consuming (minimum of 20 minutes per piece) and infinitely rewarding and gratifying. To begin with a rod of glass and a torch and end up with an amazing, one of a kind work of art is pretty amazing. Stop in to Thin Ice to see some of Vicki's pieces up close or check out her studio and make your own work of art!
