Record Bowl, Anyone?

Sara and Kelly of Nickel City Girls stopped in yesterday to bestow upon me some goodies created by their very own hands. Nickel City Girls began in 2008 when Sara and Kelly met and realized they shared a passion for recycling and repurposing items. It just so happens that both are incredibly talented artists and I consider myself extremely lucky to sell their work at Thin Ice.

While their claim to fame is painted record bowls, pictured here, Sara and Kelly also create Buffalo themed magnets, serving trays, bowls covered in maps, light switch covers, and many other unique creations.

To make the record bowls Sara and Kelly choose records which are already scratched or otherwise damaged, artistically paint them oftentimes deriving inspiration from the record album title, and then, once the paint is dry, they melt the bowls in their ovens and voila! Art! The records are sealed with a non-toxic sealant so they can be used for food but I would recommend sticking to chips or popcorn as the hole in the center of the record wouldn't bode well with soup.

Many of Nickel City Girls' items would make excellent Valentine's Day gifts for the guys in your life, who are usually a bit harder to shop for. Hope to see you soon!
