Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures and it is fast approaching, arriving on November 1st, 2012. This holiday is in connection with the Catholic's All Saints' Day or All Souls' Day, which take place on November 2nd. The holiday is an opportunity for family and friends to gather and pray for, and remember, friends and family members who have died. In addition to praying, families sometimes build private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls and visiting the graves with these as gifts
Local artist Sara L-D, of Beautiful Tuesday, has always been drawn to the folk art of Mexico and particularly loves the Milagro heart design and the religious iconic designs often seen adorning the sugar skulls mentioned above. The holiday itself and the premise that on this day we can invite/welcome loved ones that have passed on, back to visit, giving the day the spookiness of Halloween with the purity of All Saints' Day, appealed to Sara as did the premise of altars-casting a monument to an event/person. This, combined with the fact that by day Sara is an x-ray technician with an understanding of the mechanics of the human body/skeletons that far surpasses mine and more importantly, the fact that on a daily basis Sara sees more skulls than you or I ever will, all result in an artist perfectly expressing her art in a form and medium that can be appreciated by many.
Without further ado I give you Beautiful Tuesday Sugar Skulls! Not actually made out of sugar, these skulls start out as brown paper which Sara paints and decorates with fine detail, gradual color shifts, and varying themes. Each skull is one of a kind and custom work is available! Whether you're a believer in Day of the Dead or just love the look of these skulls and want to decorate your house/car/office with them, stop in or check out the website to pick out your favorite one before someone else gets to it first.
